Between January 1 and May 2, 2024, LaborLab has documented the hiring of union-busting consultants in at least 26 states and one U.S. territory. The list includes Alabama, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.
Due to historically weak enforcement of disclosure laws, the true extent of this activity is likely much larger. Many labor relations firms specializing in union-busting tactics exploit legal loopholes to conceal their operations.
These high-priced consultants, often charging hundreds of dollars per hour or thousands per day, employ a range of tactics to discourage worker unionization. This includes spreading misinformation through mandatory captive audience meetings, isolating employees, and undermining their understanding of collective bargaining and mutual aid rights.
