Persuader Watch: Amazon, Healthcare, and Nonprofit Workers Targeted

A number of noteworthy developments regarding anti-union “persuaders” were documented by LaborLab last week, which can be found below. Anti-union persuaders are consultants and lawyers hired to thwart union organizing efforts. Persuader tactics include disseminating false and misleading information about unions and their potential impact on worker benefits. They also employ intimidation tactics such as mandatory captive audience meetings where anti-union messages are delivered. Furthermore, persuaders may engage in surveillance, monitoring union activity and targeting pro-union employees, while also following workers, conducting one-on-one meetings, and collecting personal employee information that can be leveraged against organizing workers.

Citizen Access Residential Resources (Olympia, WA)

Citizen Access Residential Resources has hired anti-union persuader firm Action Resources for $3,950/day to counter an organizing drive. Action Resources has sub-contracted its union-busting work to Lighto Labor for $2,000/day. Citizens Access is a non-profit that supports adults with developmental disabilities.

EDP (Burnsville, MN)

EDP hired the persuader firm Independent Center for Worker Education for $350/hour. The election was lost 2-6.

Vacuum Truck Rentals (Richland, MS)

Vacuum Truck Rentals hired LRI Consulting Services for $425/hour.

Amazon DSD5 (Vista, CA) and Amazon DJZ4 (Kearny, NJ)

Both Amazon DSD5 and Amazon DJZ4 hired anti-union persuader Keith Williams via RoadWarrior Productions for $2,000/day to conduct union suppression.

Clean Harbors (Stockton, CA)

Clean Harbors hired Action Resources for $3,750/day, but workers won the election 13 – 7.

Optum Health (Chappaqua, CA)

It’s been reported that Optum Health (Chappaqua, CA) hired YSA Consulting in 2023. Workers also won this election 553 – 295.

Last week, LaborLab’s Union-Buster Tracker was also updated.

Over the weekend, The Labor Valley Report (TLVR) did a segment highlighting these recent examples of bosses hiring “labor relations consultants” to “persuade” workers against collectively bargaining for stronger workplaces and communities.
